Aecom to take Hong Kong sewage works underground

Aecom has been appointed by the Hong Kong government to undertake a feasibility study to relocate the Sha Tin sewage treatment works within underground caverns.

Under the HK$27.8M (£2.3M) contract with the Drainage Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Aecom will look at the potential for the Nui Po Shan of A Kung Kok as the cavern site for the new treatment works. The scope of work includes preliminary technical and impact assessments, ground investigation, preparation of an outline design for the engineering works, formulation of implementation strategies and programmes, and public engagement.

Work on the study will also include a planning review of the future land use of the existing treatment works site to establish the business case for the relocation project. Relocation could release about 28ha of land for housing and other purposes that would benefits the Sha Tin community and local environment.

Work on the study is expected to take two years to complete.
