Bam and Marti joint venture wins Swiss tunnelling contract

Royal Bam Group subsidiary Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau and Swiss contractor Marti have won a joint venture contract for the construction of the Eppenberg Tunnel in Switzerland.

Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau’s share of the contract is more than €35 M (£26M).

The construction of the 2.6km-long tunnel will involve a mix-shield tunnel boring machine (TBM), which is designed to tunnel through both hard rock and wet soil. The TBM has an outer diameter of approximately 12.80m.

The two-lane tunnel is a significant element in the Olten-Aarau railway (halfway between Basel and Zurich), which is currently being widened to four tracks.

The project also includes the construction of three emergency and escape tunnels, five shafts for technical areas and niches for M&E installations.

The tunnel is expected to be completed in August 2019.
