BSI issues new standards for geohydraulic testing

The challenge of meeting the greater groundwater protection called for under the latest EU water directive during geotechnical testing has been addressed by the BSI with the launch of a new series of standards.

Developed by industry experts and a result of consensus opinion, BS EN ISO 22282 which comprises of six parts, defines the concepts and specifies requirements relating to permeability measurement in soil and rock.

The new standard has evolved to help the geotechnical industry meet the requirements of the EU water directive, which requires the member states to increase activities that protect groundwater and fresh surface water both quantitatively and qualitatively.

“The publication of BS EN ISO 22282 is critical to the geotechnical industry as it replaces the existing tests within the British Standard BS 5930 which have now been withdrawn,” said BSI director of publishing Shirley Bailey-Wood. “The standard has been designed to work in conjunction with Eurocode 7 EN 1997, parts 1 and 2, and provides all relevant information on groundwater needed for geotechnical design and construction. Adherence with the new test methods outlined in BS EN ISO 22282 will help organizations to remain compliant with Approved Document C of the Building Regulations.”

Geohydraulic testing and engineering geologist Steve Walthall added: “It is essential to understand the ground water regime within which a project is to be constructed and vital that the correct test is carried out. The BS EN ISO 22282 series provides practical and robust methods for testing soil and aquifers in situ.”
