The A431 between Bath and Bristol is likely to remain closed for the foreseeable future due to fears that recent subsidence could result in a “catastrophic landslip”.
The route was shut last week while an investigation was carried out but Bath and North East Somerset Council has said that the failure is more serious than initially thought and further movement is expected.
According to a council spokesman, high levels of ground water are likely to be the cause of the movement, which is still on going. “We cannot risk public safety,” he said. “The road will continue to be closed for the foreseeable future – this applies to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
“There is the potential for a catastrophic landslip that could prove fatal to anyone in its path. This is not a decision we have taken lightly.”
The spokesman confirmed that further investigations were undertaken over the weekend.
