Construction of a rail line from Beijing to the US is being considered by the Chinese government according to local reports.
The proposed 13,000km rail link would also connect Siberia and Canada via the Bering Strait and call for a 200km long undersea tunnel.
Wang Mengshu, a railway expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, told the state-run China Daily newspaper that discussions are already underway and Russia has been considering the proposal for many years.
The US rail link is one of four projects currently being looked at in Beijing. The first is a rail link through Europe to Moscow, the second is a route through Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Turkey to Germany and the third is a rail line from south-western city of Kunming and ending in Singapore.
