Crossrail’s eighth and last tunnel boring machine launched

Crossrail has confirmed that the final tunnel boring machine (TBM) on the scheme has now been launched.

The TBM – named Elle after Olympic swimmer Ellie Symmonds – was launched from Pudding Mill Lane near the Olympic Stadium to drive the second of two 2.7km long tunnels to Stepney Green.

The twin tunnels will create the north eastern spur of Crossrail to take the route from Whitechapel to Shenfield in Essex.

The first TBM – Jessica- completed her drive from Pudding Mill Lane to Stepney Green earlier this month and is now being dismantled for transportation to the Limmo Peninsula near Canning Town where she will be used to drive another tunnel towards Victoria Dock Portal.
