Award for Equipment Innovation

This category was open to any company that could show excellence through new product or technology development in the past 12 months.

Shortlisted entries had to demonstrate how the innovative new product or technology had delivered benefits in health and safety, in-use performance, sustainability or cost during on site delivery of a geotechnical project. Evidence to show how the product or technology improved the performance or quality of service that the purchasing company offers to its clients was essential.

During early excavation for Marble Arch Place project, a disused subway was discovered encroaching on the site boundary by 270mm and there was not sufficient room to construct an external guidewall for the 275m diaphragm wall.

BBGE devised a solution that removed the requirement for the external guidewall and all the temporary works equipment was re-designed so, instead of the simply supported traditional system, an innovative cantilevered system was developed.

The cantilevered system was butted against the subway and avoided the need for one support provided by the external guidewall. An adjustable anchorage system provided suffcient locational tolerances and all equipment was easily moveable and multi-purpose to reduce the amount of equipment required.

In order to minimise noise at Thames Tideway sites, CVBJV, Gap Hire Solutions and Brendon Powerwashers collaborated to develop the innovative Super Silent Pressure Washer, with a measured sound pressure level average of below 78dBa at 1m. Powered by diesel engines, its cooling system uses combined air and water cooling, eliminating the requirement for a conventional radiator, and reducing the air inlet opening in the canopy enclosure.

The two-part aluminium soundproof canopy is easily hinged open to allow access to all the main service components and the engine has shutdown protection for low oil pressure, high coolant temperature and low water.

In order to reduce carbon footprint and noise, an alternative power system for the Hydrofraise diaphragm wall piling rig has been developed.

No longer powered by diesel, the electrically powered machine with an Evolution 3/5 Hydrofraise mounted on a Soilmec SC120 crane with a 600kW electro-hydraulic powerpack, is connected to an 11kV UKPN substation on site. Then using an air-cooled mining transformer mounted in a liftable ISO container frame, it is further stepped down to 400V supply which powers the hydraulic powerpack mounted on the machine.

The result is a machine powered by electricity that emits less noise, reduces vehicle movements and delivers efficient operational outputs.

The Dywidag Safety Fence provides a removable, reusable and rapid to install low energy protection fence for falling objects or fall arrest. The system uses lightweight materials formed into shapes or profiles designed to provide maxim stiffness.

The base plate is formed from box section and each arm of the base plate is secured to the ground using self-drilling micro-piles which can be hand drilled. The posts are formed from threaded hollow bar with a high radial stiffness to weight ratio and the high tensile strength interceptor mesh.

The fence can be installed on slope or on flat ground.

The Fugro Amphibious Buggy (Fab) is a drilling rig that can float, propel itself both in and out of water and can be elevated to survive both tidal movement and small weather events.

The platform is comprised of two tracked pontoons and a small deck area for drilling operations, a powerpack capable of tracking and jacking operations and a fully enclosed cabin for the operator.

The Fab can be mobilised by road to the nearest quayside, where the legs and jacking system are assembled. It is then towed to site by sea using Fugro’s in-house vessels which are designed for towing small jack-up platforms.

Topcon’s Delta Monitoring System provides users with a reliable, intuitive and remote-operated system, combining measurement hardware and software to reduce risk on projects, and safeguard data.

Made up of three technologies – Delta Link, Delta Log and Delta Watch - it monitors structural movement, collects data and can communicates this to the team in the office and on site

With embedded control, local storage and smart power management, the system can continually collect data without any impact from adverse external factors, which can be analysed quickly and remotely to reduce risk during the full life cycle of any asset.


Utterberry smart sensor system



The Utterberry smart sensor system uses a network of miniature, long life (battery powered) and ultra-robust sensors - each with sensor technologies and artificial intelligence - to detect sub-millimetre movement and transmit results digitally at a frequency determined by the project.

The system is able to detect temperature, humidity and vibration and report these findings simultaneously and begins monitoring with no outside input or interference.

No line of sight is required between sensors and installation requires no drilling or cutting - fixing the sensor with adhesive is sufficient, enabling long term, high frequency monitoring in inaccessible or unsafe areas.
