Transitioning to digital information management in ground investigation

The demand for digital output in AGS4 format is increasing dramatically, and the reliance on digital information means that the need for providing accurate and cross-referenced information has never been greater.

Using the Formworks platform, Bam has developed specific forms to enable data to be entered in the form of standard daily logs but with background links to AGS tabs. Using key/AGS the user can convert the template to AGS4 data at the click of a button.

Data is validated upon entry and users are prompted to correct errors and inconsistencies.

A Victorian terrace test house has been used to demonstrate how flood prevention could be incorporated into homes, in particular prevent flood water entering doorways, air bricks and windows, and ground water rising up through the floor.

Delta membranes were fitted to the house to demonstrate how they provide an immediate barrier. The walls and floor were lined with a cavity drain membrane, and the structure was made more resilient by installing a Delta perimeter drainage channel rebated into the floor.

Sensor Activated Failsafe Enabled Rig Guarding System – SAFER G

SAFER G is a sensor based guarding system which replaces the interlocked gates at the front of the rotary rig. The system plugs straight into the rig’s control and safety system to provide the driller with a failsafe system which requires no gates to be opened. If the system is triggered by somebody being detected or if a sensor fails, the system will not allow the driller to override the system and re-start rotation.

The sensors create a safeguarded zone to the front of the rig and is triggered only when parts of the human body enter. It uses a technology which sees through spray, water and dust and does not stop if there is a build-up of dirt on the sensors.

To avoid common mistakes when describing soils, and the Particle Size Indicator is a rigid plastic rectangle which has real specimens of silt and sands of different sizes on it to enable easy comparison.

Suitable for use in the field, laboratory, office or training room, the specimens allow both visual and tactile comparisons for accurate assessment to be made. Gravel sizes can be determined by attempting to pass the particles to be assessed through differently sized holes, and limiting sizes are also printed on indicator from clay up to large boulders.

Born out of a need to produce accurate and timely records and in a uniform way across the business, the Keltbray Integrated Piling system (Kips) was developed to digitalise construction data.

The bespoke software program allows data sharing and recording from office to site using laptops and tablets. This allows for central regulation of data, producing high quality pile logs, reports, inspections and audits. Pile construction schedules are maintained by the designers and for any schedule revision they simply upload the latest version which is instantly available to the site team.

Although the uptake of BIM has grown significantly, the focus has still been on physical structures with the site geology and sub-surfaces omitted.

Mott MacDonald with Seequent (Leapfrog) has developed a 3D modelling technique which allows efficient development and integration of 3D geological information into more established BIM models. They have created a solution that removes the need to hand draw sections and streamlines workflows between software. Ultimately creating one updateable 3D model that is interoperable and can be interrogated and managed.

The requirement to construct a diaphragm wall shaft with an internal diameter of only 8m to a depth of 44m, and with full depth water bar between the panels, was one that Spie had a solution for.

The restrained space meant that each panel and each bite was articulated at 30° to its neighbour giving a facetted perimeter. Installation of the water bar full depth required the use of full depth stop-ends which had to be angled at 30° to the excavated panel.

Spie developed the use of a honeycombed plastic template to fill the void and used their own hydraulic-release stop-ends to ensure that the water bar was correctly located and the stop-ends could be removed successfully.

Two years ago Van Elle Rail won a place on the ground engineering framework track bed stabilisation (TBS) – to stabilise a 1000km of sinking track.

Van Elle started from scratch to develop a new piling system and their solution is based on screwpile technology, with uniquely angled flights and bespoke detachment system. This avoided the use of all wet products and can take the full load from the time of installation. Requiring no maintenance to maintain its load bearing capacity, it can be installed quicker than other ground stabilisation system using a bespoke remote-controlled mast.

In order to increase the economic viability of the remediation of historical landfill sites, Vertase FLI developed a separation process to recover engineering materials from waste.

The process uses technologies already in existence within the mining and construction industries to recover mineral-based materials (soils, gravels, aggregates) and non-mineral based synthetic materials (plastics). These can be processed and combined to produce an engineering material with suitable geotechnical and geochemical characteristics for the construction of development platforms for housing, roads and services.
