First Doha tunnelling boring machine built

The first of 15 new tunnel boring machines (TBM) destined to construct the Doha metro has been completed at Herrenknecht’s factory in Germany.

State of Qatar minister of transport HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti visited the factory yesterday to see the first of the earth pressure balance TBMs roll off the production line.

The first two of the 15 machines were ordered by Qatari Diar, Vinci Construction Grands Projects, GS Engineering and Al Darwish working in joint venture and will be used to construct the Red South Line, which will be a key route for spectators travelling to the 2022 football World Cup. The joint venture has ordered a further three of the 7m diameter TBMs to drive the 34.7km route through limestone.
