GE Awards attracts record entries

Entries for the 2012 edition of the Ground Engineering Awards were up 50% on 2011 levels, making the shortlist selection more challenging for the judging panel than ever before.

“The quality of the entries was impressive – there were very few clear cut winners in any of the categories,” said GE Awards judge and Laing O’Rourke Explore Living development director Andy Butler. Another of the judging panel added that the calibre of the entries showed that there was still a high level of innovation and volume of interesting projects underway despite the current economic climate.

The three new categories – Consulting Firm of the Year, Contractor of the Year and Ground Investigation Specialist of the Year – attracted a high number of entries. GE is pleased to announce that AECOM Asia, Amey Consulting, Atkins, Mott MacDonald, Parsons Brinckerhoff and Ramboll have been shortlisted in the consultants’ category, while Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering, Celtic Technologies and Van Elle have made the final line-up on the contractors’ award. On the shortlist for the ground investigation specialists’ award are Bam Nuttall, Environmental Scientifics Group, Geotechnical Engineering, RSK and Structural Soils.

The Young Geotechnical Engineer was one of the most hotly contended categories with a total of 15 entries. Judges said that there were a high number of individuals who had made significant achievements in relatively short careers and it was challenging to select the top six. Making the final cut and facing interviews with the judging panel are Alistair Briffett from Bachy Soletanche, Chris Brown from Tata Steel Projects, Daryl Coughlan from Cementation Skanska, Mark Glendinning from Parsons Brinckerhoff, Roger Palmer from URS and Martin Stanley also from Bachy Soletanche.
