Fugro Seacore demonstrated its offshore engineering capabilities at the EWEA Offshore exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany, in November with the display of its specially developed R30 marine drill.
According to Fugro Seacore offshore geotechnics manager Matthew Chappell, the RM30 was developed with a specification based on close analysis of the needs of the “shallow water” geotechnical market. “It is a modular ram rig designed for ultra-rapid and efficient installation onto offshore vessels,” he explains. “Its creation benefits from our extensive experience in designing, manufacturing and operating offshore drilling units over
more than 30 years.”
The R30 uses standard offshore drilling techniques where soil and rock boring equipment is deployed through the vessel’s moonpool using a top drive power swivel. The new drill can deploy a full suite of sampling and CPT (cone penetration test) equipment, as well as wireline geophysical logging tools.
Chappell adds that with a quick configuration change, the advanced piggyback coring spread can be installed, allowing deployment of the Geobor-S coring system to obtain 102mm size core samples.
The R30 drill rig spread includes a fixed telescopic folding derrick rig, mud mixing and pumping unit, as well as other tools and ancillary equipment for geotechnical drilling operations. A hard-tied heave motion compensator is fitted to the power swivel to ensure the drill bit maintains a uniform pressure during standard API drilling operations.
