Providing radial drilling power

Radial drilling specialist Eco Friendly Installations has just taken delivery of a new 14/115 portable air compressor from Doosan Portable Power to aid its work on ground source heating projects. Compressed air from the new compressor will be used to power the down the hole hammer on Eco’s radial drilling rig.

“The new compressor will help to ensure we have a reliable source of compressed air for the radial drilling process,” said Eco production manager Gareth Davies. With a free air delivery of 11.3m3/min and an output pressure of 14 bar, the compressor provides the driving force for the hammer we use to drill the bore holes.”

According to Davies, drilling costs on ground source heat projects regularly represent more than 50% of the investment, so having an efficient system is essential for customers to see the benefits. Davies added that the radial drilling technique, which Eco brought to the UK, uses a slanted bore method where one central drill chamber is used to install heat pipes radially in all directions and angles of inclination to maximise the efficiency of the system.
