US debut for Trelleborg tunnel seals

Trelleborg has announced that its performance seals are to be used by the US tunnelling market for the first time after being specified for the second Midtown Tunnel on the Elizabeth River Tunnels project between Portsmouth and Norfolk, Virginia.

The immersed tube tunnel, which is being built by Skanska, Kiewit and Weeks Marine with design work by Parsons Brinckerhoff, consists of 11 rectangular concrete tunnel elements joined by Trelleborg seals.

According to Trelleborg its Gina and Omega gaskets to prevent water ingress were specified by Parsons Brinckerhoff due to the high stability, flexibility and low ageing behavior of its seals.

The tunnel is expected to open in late 2016 and will relieve congestion in the existing midtown tunnel.
