Geotechnical laboratory equipment specialist VJ Tech has announced the launch of the Unsaturated Direct Shear System which is designed to enable direct shear tests to be undertaken on an unsaturated soil specimen.
According to VJ Tech, the system allows the user create and control suction within the specimen during the consolidation of and shearing of the test specimen. Suction is created in a sealed chamber using a pneumatic air pressure controller and hydraulic pressure controller. The shearbox assembly comes complete with a 5bar high air entry disc.
The company has said that the benefits of the system are that it allows modelling of real world scenarios in the laboratory such as slope stability in partially saturated soils. The system can also undertake direct shear testing to BS1377 and ASTM, as well as be converted to undertake saturated tests.
The new system has an in-built four channel data logo and testing can be fully automated when used with VJ techs Clisp Studio software. The system also features an 10kN internal vertical load cell with an pneumatic actuator for vertical displacement and load and a 5kN internal horizontal load cell with a stepper motor control for horizontal loading.
