Ahmedabad Metro TBMs set to launch

Indian engineering firm Larsen and Toubro is gearing up to launch the first of two 6.57m diameter earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the Ahmedabad Metro.

Supplied by Terratec, the TBMs are for Package 2 contract for the east-west corridor of the 20.7km long Line 1 of the Ahmedabad Metro, in western India.

Awarded by the Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (Mega) company in January 2016, Larsen and Toubro’s contract includes the construction of 3.3km of twin tube running tunnels between Kalupur Railway Station and Shahpur, two underground stations at Gheekanta and Shahpur, as well as cut and cover structures, connections and launch and retrieval shafts for the TBMs.

The first of the two TBMs, S71, is due to be launched early this month from a launch shaft located at Kalupur Station, with the S72 machine expected to follow later this month.

The tunnelling works are due to be complete by December 2019.
