Tunnel boring machine (TBM) manufacturer Robbins has said that testing of the first of two machines for the new Mumbai Metro Line 3 has been completed.
The 6.65m diameter mixed ground machine has been built in Singapore and is now being dismantled for delivery to the Dogus-Soma joint venture late this year.
The two slurry TBMs will bore twin 3.5km tunnels between Mumbai Central and Worli stations and pass through three cut and cover stations along the route.
Ground conditions on the route is expected to vary from weathered through to fresh basalt and breccia with universal compressive strengths of up to 100MPa and water pressures of up to 3bar.
The 33.5km long Line 3 on Mumbai Metro will have 26 underground stations and one at grade station and a total of 17 TBMs will be used to excavate the new route.
