Bored pile wall failure leads to Rome street collapse

Investigations are underway into failure of a bored pile wall at a construction site in Rome earlier this week.

Part of the street surrounding the site collapsed when the wall failed and a number of cars fell into the basement excavation for a new residential development but no one was injured.

The local fire service said that 22 families were evacuated from their homes following the collapse at via Livio Andronico and structural checks were carried out on properties surrounding the site.

Local residents have said that cracks had appeared in the road and there was a water leak in the road in January.
