Boskalis to construct Dutch artificial island

Royal Boskalis Westminster has emerged as ‘best bidder’ in a tender to construct an artificial island in the IJmeer lake, adjacent to the existing IJburg islands in Amsterdam.

The €85M (£74.5M) contract includes the construction of an artificial island in the IJmeer lake for the development of residential housing to accommodate Amsterdam’s growth.

In the initial phase around 82ha of land will be created by constructing both soft and hard bank protection and filling the reclamation area with nearly 9M.m³ of sand. In addition, 3,500km of vertical drains will be used to improve the soil.

Boskalis will also create a 3ha nature area of reeds and a mussel bed.

The project includes a further option to create an additional 53ha of land, but isn’t included in this contract.

The award of the contract is expected next month, with construction starting later this year and scheduled to be completed in 2020.
