Bouygues confirms largest tunnel boring machine launch

Bouygues has announced that the tunnel boring machine (TBM) on the 5km-long Tuen Mun to Chek Lap Kok tunnel in Hong Kong has now been launched.

The tunnel, which Bouygues is working on with Dragados and designer Aecom, will link Lantau Island and Hong Kong’s international Chek Lap Kok airport. The tunnel bore reaches depths of up to 50m leading to high water pressures of up to 5bar.

According to Bouygues, the 17.6m diameter Herrenknecht TBM is the largest in the world and contains a number of industry-leading innovations and market firsts for Hong Kong. Bouygues has said that the TBM cutter head features sensors that can monitor wear and map the rock wall in real time, a remote controlled arm to clean and unclog the cutterhead to ease inspection and mechanically-changeable peripheral cutting wheels.
