Chennai Metro Rail (CMR) has confirmed that tunnelling work in Anna Salai has restarted after work came to a standstill six weeks ago when Russia-based tunnelling contractor Mosmetrostroy abandoned the project.
CMR has brought in Afcons to restart the work after it reportedly failed to reach agreement with Mosmetrostroy over additional payments on the Saidapet to AG DMS office section.
Mosmetrostroy was awarded the contract for design and construction of the 3km tunnels as one of two contracts covering 18km of tunnel construction, with Gammon working on 19 underground stations, for the new metro system. CMR has said that Gammon’s work on the stations is continuing on schedule.
Mosmetrostroy stopped work with 300m to bore in one direction and just 100mm in the other. Afcons has now completed the breakthrough at AG DMS, according to CMR.
CMR has said that it may appoint Afcons to work with Gammon undertake the tunnels on the6.5km long AG DMS to May Day Park section of the metro which was previously awarded to Mosmetrostroy.
Mosmetrostroy has not responded to a request for comment on the issue.
