China confirms largest subsea tunnel construction to start this year

Government of China’s Hengqin province has confirmed that construction of a 1.1km undersea tunnel will start before the end of 2015.

The 14.5m internal diameter Maliuzhou tunnel will be driven by tunnel boring machine (TBM) to link the Hengqin New Area with the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone.

The government has said that this is the first subsea tunnel to be built in the region and China’s first “super large diameter” subsea tunnel driven by TBM.

The tunnel will carry six lanes in either direction below the Maliuzhou waterway. According to government representative leading the project Hu Tianbao, the construction will be very challenging.
