Construction standards organisation Ciria’s latest guidance document is the first industry standard for rock slope netting.
The C775 Rock netting systems – design, installation and whole-life management document combines current good practice with objective information on the design, installation and maintenance of rock netting systems.
According to Ciria, the new guidance is vital as the UK’s transportation infrastructure owners and operators are increasingly using rock slope netting to safeguard against rock slope failure and progressive degradation.
The concept and need for the guidance was first recognised by the Geotechnical Asset Owners Forum following a 2013 site visit to Garron Point in Northern Ireland where a rock fall closed the road in 2009. The visit to see the remediation work highlighter the need for a standardised approach to condition monitoring and maintenance of rock netting was identified as priority.
Development of the new guidance was led by Atkins principal engineer Adrian Koe, University of Leeds senior lecturer in engineering geology Bill Murphy and Can Geotechnical director Richard Nicholson.
Issues covered by chapters in the guidance include conceptualisation for a rock netting solution and planning, design, installation and asset management of such systems. The document also contains a number of case studies and results of field trials undertaken by Can at Eldon Hills.
The work on the document was supported by a number of industry partners including Amey, Geobrugg, Department for Infrastructure Ireland, Highways England, Maccaferri, Network Rail and Transport Scotland.
