Construction underway for first US offshore wind farm

The first of five steel foundation jackets has been installed for the Block Island Wind Farm, located three miles off the Block Island coast.

Deepwater Wind’s 30MW offshore wind farm will be the first to be built in the US.

The installation of the first, 400t steel jacket marks the start of a busy construction period for the project. Over approximately eight weeks, more than 12 construction and transport barges, tugboats, crew ships and monitoring vessels will be active at the offshore construction site.

The foundation installation is being undertaken by a joint venture of Weeks Marine and Manson Construction.

The five steel jacket foundations were produced by Gulf Island Fabrication, which began fabrication work in late 2014.

Submarine cable installation is scheduled to begin in spring 2016 and erection of the five Alstom Haliade 6MW offshore wind turbines is scheduled for summer 2016.

The project is expected to be complete and operational in Q4 of 2016.
