Dam failure focus for September BGA meeting

The BGA’s evening meeting on 26 September will be delivered by Golder Associates senior consultant Mike Jefferies on the subject of Critical State Soil Mechanics (CSSM): 125 years of developments (a story of many dam failures).

Jefferies will discuss the development of CSSM from a historical perspective, illustrating the simplicity of the underlying ideas, and the wide range of contributors, and which allow a proper representation of soil behaviour in a formally generalised framework using the state parameter.

According to Jefferies, this generalisation works, with considerable detail, for real soils ranging from clays to sands. There is particular application of this concept to liquefaction, which is the cause of many dam failures and Jefferies will use case studies from Calaveros a century ago through to the recent failures of Fundao (pictured) and Cadia to illustrate his presentation.

The event will be held at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London and start at 6pm.
