Datum to start shaft monitoring at Woodsmith Mine

Datum Woodsmith Mine

The Datum Group has been awarded the instrumentation and monitoring contract for the Sirius Minerals’ £2.2bn polyhalite mine development in North Yorkshire.

Datum will provide instrumentation and monitoring for the main circular 60m deep diaphragm wall shafts being installed by Bauer Technologies for Woodsmith Mine.

The monitoring solution has been created specifically for Bauer Technologies and will see Datum install sensor arrays to measure the performance of the shafts for design verification.

Datum’s online data management system Platform Interactive (PI) will be used to collate and interactively present data from many hundreds of strain gauges and in-place inclinometers.

PI will allow all stakeholders access to the data in real time.

Datum Group CEO Rory O’Rourke said: “Datum is delighted to have been appointed to this prestigious and complex project and is proud to be working with Bauer Technologies to provide the best solution for Sirius Minerals. I was born and bred in Teesside, and to be part of the biggest industrial project in the area is a real honour”.

Bauer Technologies managing director Martin Blower said: “It is essential to the programme and running of the project that Bauer appointed a reputable and experienced monitoring company, Datum has vast experience in providing monitoring solutions and we are confident that they will deliver the hi-tech, innovative monitoring system that this project demands”.
