Dubai’s Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the completion of tunnelling works for the Route 2020 Project.
Tunnelling began in October 2017 for the 3.2km tunnel, with TBMs working at depths ranging from 12m to 36m.
The TBM, named ‘Al Wugeisha Expo 2020’ started off Discovery Gardens and reached the underground station nearby Jumeirah Golf Estates, last February 2018. The tunnelling works then continued to Dubai Investment Park, and the to the final point at the Green Community.
When completed, the new 15km branch will start at Nakheel Harbour on the existing Red Line, then run on 11.8km of viaduct with stations serving The Gardens, Discovery Gardens and Al Furjan. The stations at Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubai Investment Park will be part of the newly tunnelled 3.2km underground section, before the terminus at Expo 2020 site.
It is reported that works in the metro viaducts are set for completion in November this year, and all railway works of the project will be finished in July 2019. The trial run of the metro will start in February 2020, ahead of the opening of the Expo.
The Transport Authority awarded the contract to build Route 2020 to the Expolink consortium of Alstom, Acciona and Gülermak.
