Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority has said that tunnelling work on the extension of its metro system from Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station to the Expo site is now 50% complete.
The 3.2km tunnel on the 15km Route 2020 extension is a key part of the project.
The tunnel boring machine is work at depths between 12m and 36m below ground level.
All tunnelling work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Work on the stations on the metro extension are not as well progressed as the tunnel work with completion rates varying from 4% to 42%, although half the deep foundations for Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station are reported to be complete.
The new metro is expected to be commissioned in February 2020.
