Dynamic compaction transforms Helsinki port

liebherr hs8130hd dynamic soil compaction 2

Use of dynamic compaction by contractor Takanen is progressing transformation of Helsinki’s Jätkäsaari port.

The port on the south side of Helsinki has been undergoing soil compaction as part of its redevelopment from a cargo port, into residential and leisure area.

When completed the new port will have 12,900m² terminal building, two new quays, as well as three disembarkation bridges and the deepening of the Pihlajasaari by-pass fairway.

Takanen has deployed a Liebherr duty cycle crawler crane to compact the soft soil using dynamic compaction techniques. The Liebherr duty cycle crawler crane HS 8130 HD has a 14t drop weight which is being dropped from 10m to between 50 and 70 kN/m2. This is compacting the ground down to a depth of 7m across the 25,000m² building site.

The funnel-shaped craters created through the impaction are being filled with new soil.
