On 14 May, the BGA Early Career Members Group and the British Tunnelling Society Young Members co-hosted an event at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
Martin Preene of Preene Groundwater Consulting presented an overview of the range of techniques used to control groundwater on excavation and tunnelling projects.
He described the practical application of dewatering and cut-off solutions, drawing on his extensive global project experience, and gave an overview of design and specification considerations. Widely adopted solutions, as well as specialist techniques, such as ground freezing and electro-osmosis, were also discussed.
This highly successful event was the first to be co-hosted by the two organisations and was followed by a joint social in the ICE bar.
