Environmental specialist ESI and flood risk modelling consultant Ambiental have announced that they have combined ESI’s national groundwater flood risk map into Ambiental’s UK Flood Map 4 product.
According to ESI, groundwater flooding represents one of the most complex areas of flood risk modelling and is more difficult to predict than fluvial, pluvial and coastal flood risk sources. ESI added that groundwater is one of the three largest infrastructural risks facing the UK in future years, together with climate change and shrink/swell subsidence.
The companies have said that integration of the data into Ambiental’s maps creates an address-specific multi-peril flood models for the whole of the UK.
“Our clients are demanding ever more granular detail in order to make critical business decisions, both in terms of refining flood underwriting strategies and in response to Flood RE [insurance scheme],” Ambiental managing director Justin Butler. “Groundwater flooding can significantly exacerbate surface water flood risk, and flood mapping datasets currently on the market do not consider this risk explicitly.”
