Excavation complete for longest road tunnel in Portugal

Excavation of the north gallery of the Marão Tunnel – the longest road tunnel in the Iberian Peninsula – has been completed.

The tunnelling milestone comes three weeks after the opening of the southern gallery of the tunnel.

The 5.6km-long road tunnel will be part of Portugal’s A4 motorway between Vila Real and Amarante, cutting through the Serra do Marão.

The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2015 and opened to traffic in the first quarter of 2016.
