Exeter ground collapse swallows bench

Exeter City Council has said that an investigation is underway to understand what triggered a ground collapse next to the River Exe earlier this week.

The bench had only recently been installed

The 4m wide “sink hole” swallowed a memorial park bench next to St James Weir following heavy rain on Tuesday night.

The council has said that it is working to stabilise the bank and backfill the hole but is hopeful that it will be able to recover the bench, which had only recently been installed.
