The first of 17 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that will drive the the tunnels for Mumbai’s first underground metro system – the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro 3 corridor – has arrived on site.
The TBM is the first of three earth pressure balance machines being delivered to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation by Herrenknecht from its Chinese factory in Guangzhou for the project.
The 6.6m diameter TBM is expected to take 45 days to assemble on site with tunnelling scheduled to start in October from Siddhivinayak to Dharavi.
The new metro route includes 51km of tunnels, which will be driven over the next two years. The remaining TBMs are expected to be delivered by February 2018.
