Statoil subsidiary Hywind Scotland has appointed Spain-based joint venture Navantia-Windar to supply five “spar-type” floating foundations for its new Scottish offshore wind farm.
The floating foundations, which will support 6MW turbines, will be the world’s first commercial floating wind farm but the system has been under test off the Norwegian coast since 2009.
Each foundation will have a displacement of 3,500t and measure 90m in length by 14.5m in diameter. The foundations will be secured in place by tethers attached to the seabed.
Manufacture will start at the Navantia Fene Yard in Spain in December this year and the last unti ti scheduled for delivery in February 2017.
