French first for Grand Paris Express shaft construction

A vertical shaft machine (VSM) has been delivered to Malakoff to undertake shaft construction for the Malleret-Joinville station on the Grand Paris Express project.

The scheme is the first in France to use VSM technology and the Herrenknecht machine will bore a 40m deep, 11.9m diameter shaft for the station on the new Line 15.

The VSM was selected for the site in place of diaphragm wall techniques being used elsewhere on the Grand Paris Express partly because of the faster construction but also to avoid lowering of the groundwater around the work area.
