More than 150 guests gathered in London last night to mark Ground Engineering’s 50th anniversary.
Editor Claire Smith was joined by Barry Johnson, who worked as commercial director on the launch of GE in 1968, and Imperial College’s John Burland, who played an instrumental role in supporting development of the magazine’s concept to deliver speeches to celebrate the occasion.
Johnson set out the commercial challenges of launching GE, as well as the industry drivers for why the publication was what the sector needed. Burland outlined the benefits GE has delivered for the sector in “covering what is going on right now in the industry with new developments, new equipment, on-going projects, view points from a range of practitioners and technical papers”.
Burland went on to talk about how the industry has evolved over the lifespan of GE with a review of the changing techniques and landmark projects that have pushed the sector forward.
“Ground Engineering plays a vital role in promoting excellent ground engineering and may it continue to do so for at least another 50 years,” said Burland.
Smith said: “Technical content delivered in a practical manner has always been at the core of GE’s remit and that remains unchanged even 50 years on from its launch.”
Smith talked about the evolution of GE from being a magazine to become a brand in recent years. “We now have annual conferences, an awards event and a website offering daily news updates and a technical paper database that has brought together every technical paper ever published by GE over the last five decades,” she said.
“In 2019, we plan to continue with this evolution with the launch of themed daily enewsletters in January that will allow you to pick and choose which you receive to ensure the GE content delivered to your inbox is both relevant to you and timely.”
Smith added that readers will be offered the opportunity to opt for a digital-only subscription next year. “The move does not mean the end of paper copies that have served GE’s readership so well for the last 50 years – the choice of how you consume GE’s content will be yours,” she said.
Smith concluded the speeches by raising a toast to Ground Engineering and it’s next 50 years.
