Gallery: Tunnelling begins on LA Metro’s Purple Line extension

Tunnelling has begun on the LA Metro’s Purple Line 14km extension project.

Two tunnel boring machines, named Elsie and Soyeon, have begun digging parallel tunnels underneath Wilshire Boulevard between Koreatown and Beverly Hills to connect three new stations and 6.3km of new rail.

Advancing about 18m per day at depths of 15m to 21m deep, it will take around two years to bore both tunnels.

In July Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority approved the award of a US£410M (£308.7M) contract to the Frontier-Kemper/Tutor Perini Joint Venture for the Purple Line Extension Section 3 Tunnels Project.
