Gallery: World’s first underground hotel opens in former quarry

Intercontinetal’s Shanghai Wonderland hotel, which opens to the public today, is believed to be the first underground hotel with 16 floors below ground within a quarry, including two underwater.

Atkins worked with Chinese developer Shimao Group to redevelop the 90m deep quarry into a luxury hotel.

The hotel features two storeys above ground but the main hotel is keyed into the rock face of the quarry and exposed rock is one of the main architectural features of the hotel.

The quarry was operational from 1950 to 2000 and work on design of the hotel started in 2006 but construction did not get underway until 2013.

A source close to the project said that there were concerns about the ground conditions at the site but the geological structure of the rock in the Sheshan quarry proved to better than expected.
