Keller has announced that it has completed its first project in the UK using helical piles as part of a railway platform extension project in Cleveland.
The work involved installation of 24 4.1m long piles at Yarm Station for main contractor Story Contracting.
According to Keller, consultant TSP Projects selected the helical pile solution as it reduce the programme compared to conventional concrete pad foundations. The helical solution was delivered over two weekend track possessions.
“The works were successfully completed within programme and budget - a huge success for Keller’s first helical pile project in the UK,” said Keller senior estimator Peter Farr.
“We consulted with Keller colleagues from Cyntech in Canada where this is a more widely-used technique to tap into their expertise. This shows our global strength allowing us to call upon the wider Keller family to help us work with consultants and main contractors to develop solutions here in the UK.”
According to Keller, the ability to load helical piles as soon as they are installed negates curing periods associated with concrete which is beneficial to reducing cost and programme.
