Hochtief-lead JV secures Qatar tunnel contract

Hochtief has announced that it is part of a joint venture that has won a design and build contract for a 14.7km sewage tunnel in Qatar.

The work on the central section of the Inner Doha Resewerage Implementation Strategy (Idris) project will be undertaken by a joint venture of Hochtief, Al Sraiya Strabag for Roads and  Infrastructure and Petroserv and has been valued at €265M (£191M).

The work for the Public Works Authority is part of an extensive refurbishment and expansion of the overloaded sewerage system in the historic south of Doha.

The 4.5m internal diameter tunnel will be driven by tunnel boring machine and the segmental concrete lining will be supplemented by a secondary HDPE membrane. The contract includes construction of a number of shafts, up to 45m deep, to connect into other parts of the Idris project.

The work is scheduled to be completed in early 2019.
