Implenia lands Zurich motorway “above ground” tunnel deal

20180706 implenia einhausung schwamendingen

Swiss federal roads office Fedro has commissioned a consortium led by Implenia to construct a structure to enclose the A1 motorway in Schwamendingen where the motorway enters the north of Zurich.

Implenia will undertake the CHF200M (£152M) cut and cover project in partnership with Marti Bauunternehmung, Walo Bertschinger and Anliker.

The project includes foundation engineering, earthworks, surfacing, concreting, repairs and cabling and is expected to start on site in spring next year with completion scheduled for 2024.

The work will create a 30m wide “above ground” tunnel that is unique in Switzerland and will feature a public park on the roof of the structure to reconnect a neighbourhood that was split by the building of the motorway.

Fedro has said that the project will improve the quality of life for local people and eliminate noise and pollution from the road.
