Plans to undertake an independent review of Crossrail 2 costs in a bid to make the scheme more affordable has been widely welcomed.
Transport for London and Department for Transport’s Independent Affordability Review will be led by former Thames Tideway Tunnel managing director Mike Gerrard.
Gerrard will lead an expert panel looking at how Crossrail 2 can continue to learn lessons and best practice from other major projects such as Crossrail. The review will also look at how we can ensure those who stand to benefit from new infrastructure contribute to funding it.
The review, which was first signalled by the chancellor in the 2017 Autumn Budget, is expected to deliver an interim report this summer.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “I’m pleased that government has reaffirmed its commitment to Crossrail 2 and am happy to endorse Mike Gerrard as the chair of the Independent Affordability Review.
“There’s no doubt that this project is essential for the future prosperity of London, the south east and our country so it’s vital we continue to progress with it. Only through Crossrail 2 can we ensure our future transport network is fit for purpose and provide a huge boost to the UK’s economy with hundreds of thousands of much-needed jobs and homes.”
