Jakarta MRT tunnelling begins

Tunnelling on the Jakarta mass rapid transit (MRT) project has commenced with launch of the first tunnel boring machine (TBM).

The TBM, named Antareja, was launched at the Pemuda Statue in Senayan and will perform excavation work and construction of the MRT underground tunnels towards Setiabudi district.

The tunnelling machine – with a diameter of 6.7m and weighing 323t – is expected to progress at a speed of 8m per day.

The construction work will be completed by the SOWJ joint venture, consisting of Shimizu, Obayashi, Wijaya Karya and Jaya Construction.

The earth pressure balance (EPB) machine was manufactured by Japan Tunnel Systems Corporation.

The tunnelling phase of the project is scheduled to be complete by December 2016.
