Lorry crash creates tunnel crown collapse risk in Norway

Water leaks following a fuel tanker crash in a Norwegian subsea tunnel has raised concerns over the structural integrity of the 2km route, according to a report by Associated Press.

The incident occurred in the Skatestraum tunnel in Bremanger, which links two islands to the north of Bergen yesterday.

The driver of the lorry escaped before his vehicle exploded and no one was seriously injured. The driver said that he experienced a fault with the brakes just before the crash, which occurred in the deepest part of the tunnel at 91m below sea level.

Local police have said that water leaking through the crown had extinguished the fire but there are now concerns that the tunnel may collapse.
