Lower Thames Crossing plans add to geotechnical scope

The latest plans for the Lower Thames Crossing put out to consultations today see the tunnel extended by 600m into Kent and parts of the route lowered by more than 5m to minimise the visual impact.

The proposed new road will connect Kent, Thurrock and Essex through the biggest road tunnel in the UK.

Highways England has said that the project will provide over 90% more road capacity across the River Thames east of London, and transform journeys through the south east region and beyond.

In launching the 10 week consultation period, Highways England said that the more detailed design aims to maximise the project’s huge benefits and includes significant changes to minimise the impact on local communities and the environment.

The preferred route was announced in April last year and the initial consultation attracted 47,000 responses and some of the concerns have been addressed with the design changes.

Transport secretary Chris Grayling has said that the new Thames crossing would help transform journeys, create new business opportunities in Kent and Essex and unlock productivity across the UK.

The first phase of ground investigation has already been completed.
