Monopile and scour innovations to benefit Borssele wind farm

Wind power developer MHI Vestas Offshore Wind has appointed the Two Towers Consortium, formed by Van Oord, Investri Offshore and Green Giraffe, to deliver its innovative Borssele Wind Farm scheme in the Netherlands.

Van Oord will deliver innovative solutions for the monopile connect and the scour protection for the twin turbine development off the coast of Zeeland that is expected to generate 19MW by 2021.

Van Oord is responsible for the design and the offshore works, while Green Giraffe will assist in the project management and financing of the project. Investri Offshore provides the project director.

To reduce installation time and maintenance in the future, Van Oord has said that it will connect the monopile and transition pieces using a slip joint in place of a conventional grouted solution.

The company has also said that the scour protection is a “revolutionary” eco-design that creates a reef system, including oyster reefs, which adds to the diversification of the North Sea environment while creating protection for the turbines.
