More than 40 missing in Chinese hydro project landslide

Officials from contractor Sinohydro Bureau 16 Co have said that 41 people are missing after heavy rainfall triggered a landslide at the construction site of a new hydropower plant in China’s Fujian Province.

Sinohydro Bureau 16 has been working with Sinohydro Bureau 12 on the extension of the Chitan hydropower station for Huadian Fuxin Energy since 2015 and is scheduled to complete the work next year.

The contractors have said that more than 100,000m3 of material was disturbed by the landslide which occurred early on Sunday morning. Rescue attempts have been hampered by further slope failures on access roads to the site and continued heavy rain.

Chinese president Xi Jinping has urged strengthening of local monitoring and safety checks for hidden dangers to prevent secondary disasters.
