Mumbai metro launches sixth tunnel boring machine

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has launched its sixth tunnel boring machine (TBM) and achieved over 500m of tunnel on the Mumbai Metro Line 3 scheme.

The latest TBM, named Vaitarna-2, was launched at Azad Maidan and will drive a 4.5km tunnel between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Mumbai Central.

“The project is on track and we are expecting to complete the tunnelling work by June 2021,” said MMRC managing director Ashwini Bhide.

The project has taken delivery of 11 out of 17 planned TBMs and six are now launched. The next machine is currently being assembled at the Science Museum and will drive a tunnel to Worli.

Elsewhere on the scheme, Vaitarna-1 has already driven 132m from Azad Maidan to Mumbai Central and Kishna-1 and Krshna-2 are driving parallel bores from Naya Nagar to Dadar.
