Musk hints that hybrid TBM nearly ready

The Boring Company’s founder Elon Musk has tweeted that the firm’s second generation hybrid tunnel boring machine (TBM), Line-Storm, will be operational “in a month or so”.

According to the tunnelling start up, the hybrid TBM will enable the firm to dig tunnels twice as quickly  as conventional TBMs and will feature components from traditional machines and bespoke hardware designed by the Boring Company.

In a tweet earlier this week, Musk explained that the firm was concentrating on the TBM’s speed and follow distance in the test tunnel.

The Boring Company is also working on Prufrock, a fully electric zero emssion TBM expected to be capable of digging 10 to 15 times faster than current TBMs.

Earlier this year Musk quoted it would cost $1bn (£557M) to bore a tunnel through the Blue Mountains in Australia and in December the firm unveiled its first completed tunnel in Los Angeles, US.
