Network Rail launches Lidar earthwork failure detection procurement

Network Rail is seeking a partner to explore the potential to implement a remote failure detection trial using Lidar along the base of a railway cutting slope in Wales.

Network Rail announced the procurement process through the Official Journal of the European Union but the pre-qualification questionnaire must be completed through its Bravo portal.

The aim of the system is to detect earthwork movement or failure using multiple monitoring stations that are networked to a central data recording system.

According to Network Rail, implementation of the system will help avoid and derailments through early detection and intervention.

Network Rail has said that it expects to award the contract in late September.
